A gateway to the Orient
Maison Van Cleef & Arpels returns to the very roots of perfumery by exploring one of the most precious materials in the East. This stone, found on the beaches of China after drifting in from the sea, was given the name Ambergris. It is a sensual, mineral, tobacco-scented fragrance; subtly salty and animalistic, fuels the imagination of anyone lucky enough to cross its path. In China, it is called “imperial” and to this day it is still said to possess energising properties. Across the Orient, amber has never ceased to inspire perfumers. Its many mysterious tales gave nose Quentin Bisch the desire to pay homage to this ingredient.
Royal amber
“I created Ambre Impérial to be the perfect combination of different essences symbolic of the Orient – the legendary birthplace of fragrance,” explains Quentin Bisch. “I carefully selected the precious ingredients that I consider to be the quintessence of a true amber – a blend of sweet yet spicy sensations.” Ambre Impérial transports us to a dreamlike Orient, a land of Arabian Nights. This fragrance does not hint or suggest. The immediately identifiable oriental accord combines the freshness of bergamot in the top notes with the fullness of tonka bean in the base notes. This singular contrast is strengthened by the presence of fresh, bursting pink peppercorn and Laos cinnamon. The ambery notes then mingle with benzoin and vanilla. Several woody notes bring the scent to a close. Spicy, resiny and balsamic, the fragrance is mysterious and majestic in equal measure.
